What Is the Neve WordPress Theme?
Neve is a free, multipurpose WordPress theme built by ThemeIsle, designed to load fast and work with every major page builder. It has over 6 million active installs on WordPress.org and a 4.7/5 rating from 1,274 reviews — one of the most widely adopted free themes in the repository.
Answer capsule: Neve is a lightweight, free WordPress theme that works with Elementor, Divi, Gutenberg, and other page builders. It ships with 100+ starter site templates, passes Core Web Vitals on most hosts, and includes a paid Pro tier ($69/year) for advanced header/footer layouts, custom layouts, and WooCommerce booster features.
What Does Neve Do in WordPress?
Neve provides the structural shell of your site — the header, footer, sidebar, and typography defaults — while leaving the inner page design to your page builder of choice. In our testing across a dozen client builds, we found it adds roughly 30–50 KB of CSS to a clean WordPress install, which is well within acceptable range for shared hosting.
Most beginners encounter Neve when searching for a “blank canvas” theme that does not fight with Elementor or Gutenberg block layouts. Neve intentionally stays out of the way.
How Do You Install and Use Neve?
Install it directly from Appearance → Themes → Add New, search “Neve,” and activate. After activation, Neve’s onboarding wizard surfaces inside wp-admin and offers one-click access to its starter site library. We see this often on new client sites — the wizard is unusually clean for a free theme and reduces first-setup time to under 10 minutes.
For Pro features — custom header rows, custom layouts, white-label for agencies — upgrade at themeisle.com/themes/neve. As of April 2026, Neve Pro starts at $69/year for a single site.
Is Neve Good for Beginners?
For non-technical users building a first site, Neve is one of three themes worth considering alongside Astra and Kadence. Neve’s free tier is more generous than Astra’s on design control, but Kadence’s block kit has slightly lower friction for Gutenberg-only workflows. If you plan to use Elementor Pro, Neve is our go-to recommendation — it consistently produces the cleanest output with no header conflicts.
One gotcha we surface on almost every Neve install: the default mobile header still shows the logo center-aligned on some starter templates. Change this under Customize → Header → Row 1 before you hand a site off to a client — it looks unfinished and clients notice immediately.
