Why Domain Name Suggestions Matter

When you launch a WordPress site, you need a domain before you can do anything else. The WordPress.org documentation treats the domain as a prerequisite to installation. In our experience managing 200+ client sites, roughly 60–70% of first-choice .com names are already registered — which means the suggestion engine is usually the first tool a new site owner actually uses.

Suggestions exist to keep you moving. Without them, a blocked domain search has no obvious next step.

How Domain Name Suggestions Work

Registrars like Namecheap, GoDaddy, or the domain search built into hosting dashboards (SiteGround, Hostinger, Bluehost) run your input through three filters:

  1. TLD swaps — same name, different extension: .co, .org, .io, .net

How to Evaluate a Suggested Domain

Not every suggestion is worth registering. Apply these four filters:

  • Pronounceable — if you have to spell it out on a phone call, reject it
  • Under 15 characters — shorter names score better for recall and fit in mobile browser bars without truncation
  • No hyphens or numbers — best-bakery-2.com reads as spam and confuses voice search
  • .com first, then .co — as of 2026, .com still carries the strongest trust signal for business sites; we see client customers visibly hesitate on unfamiliar TLDs

One Gotcha Most Guides Skip

Trademark conflicts don’t show up in domain availability checks. A domain can be available to register while still infringing on a registered trademark. Before you accept a suggested name that includes a brand word or a close variation, run a basic search on the USPTO trademark database. We’ve seen clients receive cease-and-desist letters within three months of launch over names that cleared availability checks without issue.
